The station was built according to the plans of the line architect of the Austrian Northwest Railway, Carl Schlimp, and thus became the first railroad station of the Czech Crown on the most important and shortest railroad line between Vienna and Berlin. Construction began in 1869 and on November 8, 1871 the station was opened for regular traffic.
Originally a small station connecting Moravia with Austria, it grew over time and in 1909 more than 40 regular trains passed through the station daily.
